Marquice Cole

The Patriots announced Wednesday that they have re-signed cornerback Marquice Cole and linebacker Niko Koutouvides, the latter of which had been previously reported. Here’s a portion of the press release issued by the team on the moves:

Cole, 29, is a veteran of four NFL seasons with the Jets (2009-11) and the Patriots (2012). The 5-10, 192-pounder joined New England as a free agent on March 19. He played in 14 games with one start last season and finished with 12 total tackles, one interception, three passes defensed and seven special teams tackles. He played in both postseason games and added four defensive tackles and four special teams tackles.

Koutouvides, 31, went to training camp with New England last summer but was released on Aug. 31 before being re-signed on Sept. 19. He played in each of the final 14 games of the Patriots’ 2012 season and both postseason games. The 6-foot-2, 228-pounder registered eight special teams tackles and one tackle on defense in the regular season and one special teams tackle in the postseason. Koutouvides originally signed with New England on Aug. 14, 2011, but was released when the team trimmed the roster to 53 prior to the start of the season. He returned to the team at midseason and played in 11 games and all three postseason games.

Big deal…where are the big names? Im sorry but Koutouvides doesnt excite me.

  • Wallace Young Jr

    cole is a solid backup

  • rocketshot2012

why did they moderate and not post my comment? all i said was no one cares about these guys when they should be signing abraham and ed reed

  • PatrikFitsgerald

maybe no one cares about your comments ???

  • cfn

Why is it taking so long to sign Volmer and Edleman?

  • Schwank

My guess is that they won’t pay Volmer big $$ because of his back issues and him being out alot. Hence their interest in Winston formerly of KC. Edleman will sign somewhere when the market settles. But he has to be a fallback for them. They have Jones and interest in Sanders. Methinks if Sanders doesn’t happen maybe they turn their attention back to Edleman. They’re simply not going to overpay right now.
On another note, I wonder what’s up with Abraham/Freeney/Scott and whether that is same deal …waiting it out. I don’t see them pursuing Dumervil at all.

Big names don’t necessarily get big plays, the Pats have proven that again and again.

  • Anonymous

I’m always surprised to read fan comments about not signing big names when Daniel Snyder and Bill B have proven again and again that its not the name its the way the guy fits into your system that’s as important as anything.

  • WhaleBelly

Meanwhile Ed Reed is set to join the Texans, Dwight Freeney is set to join the Broncos. Elvis Dumervil is still available as is John Abraham. Should be interesting.

  • bench warmer

Another small cornerback and a special teams backup. Perfect.

  • starpalm

The tight wad Patriots……..Wow just what we need another undersized cornerback… Great job Robert Kraft.. Could you get any cheaper??

  • CAPatsFan

Hey, Brian Urlacher is available? Why not?

  • http://twitter.com/MAMISS65 mike missle

fantastic..Reed signs w/the Texans and Freeney +Abraham go to Denver for a visit..Stop being cheap and add an experienced pass rusher or another corner…

  • http://twitter.com/MAMISS65 mike missle

Improve the D already…A so -called defensive guru with one of the worst Defenses year after year…

  • http://twitter.com/MAMISS65 mike missle

Overpay–g-d forbid..shopping at Walmart–keep something in mind they are in the top 5 in dead cap money–over 20 million…

  • Otis

Yay! Ed Reed! I can’t wait for the 2005 season to start

  • Otis

Cuz he’s fitty years old and as injured as Big Poppi

  • boring media hype

    yawn…big fat yawn

  • boring media hype

They haven’t proved anything since 2004

  • CAPatsFan

Actually, he will be 35 in May and has missed 4-games the past 3 seasons (hardly Papi-like health?). I’m not saying sign him to anything long-term. Maybe 2/3 years? Same window for Brady?

  • Anonymous

I believe two Super Bowl appearances, 4 AFC Championship appearances and multiple playoff appearances does proves something.

  • JD

ok great, now tell me again except for signing Talib how they have improved this team on both sides of the ball?

  • JD

exactly , just look at their stellar CB, Safeties and pass rusher’s over the last 5-6 years

  • rocketshot2012

false, big names get you SB wins. The players the Pats get, do get you wins~but only in the regular season. They never have enough to beat the best teams in the playoffs.

  • JD

but when the same problems have prevented you from winning the big one (CB, Safety, Lack of a pass rush) you would think that a change in thinking- for those positions- is required….

  • Anonymous

Look at where the top defensive free agents went in the last few years, and how many super bowl wins they got. Asoumnah considered top free agent in 2011, already looking for new team, Mario Williams didn’t change the Bills much.

  • OMALLY

    Koutouvidemanzadah…championship!

  • Anonymous

One miraculous catch and one dropped Welker pass were the difference in those two Super Bowls. You forget that two of our Super Bowl wins were on clock expiring field goals. A couple plays the other way in the other two and we win those too. the modern NFL is based on offense and only a handful of DB’s can play good enough to overcome a stacked deck. Anyone who invests big money in DB’s is investing in slot machines…big play once in a while, but odds are against you.

  • my10sense

Salary cap; aside for maybe a little more room left for mid season contingencies than some other teams, the Patriots spend to it.

  • Plainville Sliders

Koutouvides is the pride of Plainville Ct, glad to see him resigning with the local team. Keep coming back to “The Ville’ for your football camps Niko. Every one at Sliders, especially Charlie and Tommy are your biggest fans, unfortunately 6’2 228 pounds didn’t run in their side of the Greek family.
