FOXBORO – Aside from fact that all three players carry certain Hall of Fame credentials with them, Bill Belichick sees a common thread between Tom Brady, Randy Moss and his former perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Lawrence Taylor.
That thread is being able to not only play the game but read the game at lightning fast speeds.
“That’s what make them special,” said the man who has coached all three. “That’s what makes Tom Brady, Tom Brady. It makes Randy Moss, Randy Moss and it made Lawrence Taylor, Lawrence Taylor. Those guys just have that sixth, seventh sense.
And it’s that sixth or seventh sense that Belichick and Patriots fans have grown accustomed to over the last decade when No. 12 steps on the field. Belichick reminded everyone on Friday just how rare this quality is.
“It’s like Brady, you see a guy coming at him from the back side, you say, ‘He doesn’t see him coming. Look out! He’ going to get hit.’ And he either ducks or throws the ball before the guy gets there.”
Belichick said, just as in real life, certain people have the skill set to process a lot of information. One bit of advice, don’t ever ask Belichick to fix your TV.
“Look, you get a bunch of people in a room. The TV’s busted, some people can walk in there and fix it. I look at it, all I see is wires, TV, VCR, Sirius radio. Whatever it is, it all looks the same to me. When I hit the button, and it doesn’t turn on, that’s it,” Belichick said of his not-so handyman skill set.
“There’s other people that come in here and bip, bip, bip, and everything works. The computer works, the TV works, the VCR works, the VHS works, everything’s perfect. Some people have a capacity to see some things. Some people have trouble with math, some people have trouble with the English language. I have trouble with both of them.”
And how does this relate to his job as an NFL head coach?
“There’s all different strengths and weaknesses,” Belichick explained. “You coach players [and] some guys see everything and some guys see nothing.”
