Bill Belichick made his weekly appearance with WEEI’s “Big Show” Monday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. Here are a couple of quick highlights from that Q&A. To listen to the complete interview, click here.
On the possibility the Patriots would acquire Larry Johnson…
Well, I haven’t seen the wire but I assume he’ll be on there. I would doubt it. First of all, I think a player like that that’s on the wire, similar to [wide receiver] Chris Chambers who came on last week, somebody will claim ahead of us. Even if we claim him, I doubt that we would get him. But, we’d have to decide whether we would want him or not. Maybe that’s something we’ll talk about, but I would think he’d be claimed before he would get to us.
On vetting a player who has some public baggage…
That’s a good question, and it depends on what your options are. Some times it’s other players, some times it’s coaches some times it’s front office people. You try and find somebody you think you can trust and really knows how he would be in your system. Not somewhere else or some other set or circumstances, but how it would be in our system.
On Dillon and Moss…
I had never met Corey when we traded for him, and I hadn’t talked to Randy until, Randy came in that Sunday morning at like, 9 a.m. or 8 o’clock before the trade was done at 10. So I hadn’t met those players until we had actually made those deals. Anyway, you just try and find somebody who can give you accurate information.
Anything surprise you about the Wildcat?
Not too much. You know, we expected when White was in there it would be some type of option game, which is what it had been, and what he does. They ran that speed option and we just didn’t, we just didn’t play it very well. And then they ran it the second time and they pitched the ball, and we didn’t support that very well. So unfortunately, those two plays hurt us a little bit. And they were things that we prepared for that we just didn’t — when they came up, we just didn’t do then as well as we would have liked to have. Then, we talked about it at halftime and they tried it again in the second half a couple of times and really didn’t get too much out of it. They do what they do, which is they change things up a lot. Some of the formations and plays that we saw — a couple of their two tight end formations — are things that we got when Henning was at Carolina back in 2004 and 2005 when we played them down there. Same thing with the empty. Those were kind of some of the looks that we got when we — I’m not saying he hadn’t shown in the last five years, but hadn’t shown them in the last five weeks. So you know he dug out some things and stuff like that and we had some adjustments to make during the game defensively. Offensively, they tried to double Moss and Welker at times. Not all the time, but we did get some of that. And then, they pressured some like they usually try to do. They played some of their, you know, man coverage and a little bit of zone, so that was kind of the game. There were some adjustments during the game, you know. We have more on defense probably than we did on offense.
