FOXBORO — A two-game losing streak can really dampen a football player’s mood, but not Laurence Maroney.
Maroney isn’t letting Sunday’s loss get to him. On Monday, the Patriots locker room was understandably subdued. Then came Maroney — walking briskly to his locker, the media instantly flocked to him. The 24-year-old running back joked with the media that he doesn’t talk on Mondays but made an exception because, his his words, “You guys have been cool with me this year.”
It seems as though Maroney has the exact attitude coach Bill Belichick is looking for and what the Patriots need following a loss and letting their division lead slip another game.
“No panic from my standpoint, I know we have a great team, have a great offense, a great defense,” Maroney said. “We just got to get everything together and start playing all 60 minutes and come out the second half with the same intensity we come out with in the first half.”
That may be easier said than done for the Patriots. They’ve been outscored 54-31 in the second half over the last four games. Despite the poor play of late, the Patriots still hold the division lead — and Maroney made sure to point that out.
“People can lose focus but you got to let them know we are in the drivers seat, we still can control our own destiny. What are we, we’re one game up now? So everythings a lot closer but we still control our fate instead of sitting around waiting for somebody else to lose,” he said. “We just got to go out there and keep playing and keep fighting.”
That word “fighting” has been used a lot following the loss Sunday. Tom Brady said after the game, “At times we do and at other times, I don’t think we fight very hard.” On Monday afternoon, Maroney was asked about Brady’s comments and whether he has noticed the same thing from his teammates as Brady has.
“Well, I can’t speak for the team I can just speak for myself,” he said. “When it comes down to fighting I feel like I’m going to go hard no matter the situation is. Whenever the call my number, I’m going to fight and and I’m gonna keep continue fighting and that’s my main goal. No matter how much they use me or how little they use me everytime I’m in there I’m gonna run hard.”
