Highlights of Bill Belichick on “The Big Show” 12.14.09 at 6:28 pm ET
By Christopher Price

Patriots coach Bill Belichick made his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Big Show” earlier on Monday. Here are some of the highlights of that Q&A. To listen to the entire interview, click here.

Flat in the first half?
No, not really. I thought we played pretty well defensively. We just missed some plays on offense — we had our chances there and didn’t convert a couple of third downs. Missed a couple of plays there. But I didn’t think it was a lack of effort. We just didn’t execute as well as we needed to. But finishing the game was real good. We went out there in the two-minute situation defensively and made the stops there and got the ball back, and then offensively, we ran the clock out running the ball, which was good. We practiced that and we talked about that all week. Not knowing what the situation would be at the end of the game, if we were ahead or if we were behind and how to play it. I thought that the last five minutes of the game was pretty well-executed. So that was good.

Surprised at the comments from Carolina about Moss?
I think I already had a comment on that. It’s pretty amazing that the guy is one of the most productive players in the history of the league…

They said if you get into him early, you can watch films … is there any evidence of that when you watch films of Randy that he can be shut down early?
Didn’t take [Moss] long to get into the Miami game.

Did you have a problem with his performance yesterday at all?
Well, I think that every one of us out there — every coach, every player, every offensive player, there’s always room for improvement, so I’m not going to say anybody did a perfect job out there, me included. And that’s the way it is every week. We can look at, especially any skill player, you can look at any one of them and find a guy that didn’t have big stats in a game and say, ‘What happened to him in that game?’ We can do that every week with every team. So I’m not really … I don’t think that’s what’s important. What’s important is we won, and we played well enough to win. Did we make mistakes in the game? Sure. Do we need to improve on things? Absolutely. That’s what we’re going to work on this week.

Were you satisfied with his effort? People are questioning his effort.
I think Randy’s been a good football player for us since he’s been here.

Is he frustrated at all with not being a big part of this offense the last three or four weeks?
He’s one of the top receivers in the league, Steve.

I know that, but is there any frustration … for a guy who has competed on the level he’s competed on, is he frustrated? Is there anything you’re seeing differently?
I think our team wants to win. I think everybody wants to win. We didn’t win the two weeks prior to this one, and we won yesterday, and that’s what its about. Just playing well enough to win. So, that’s what it’ll be this week too. Whatever contributions we get as a team, if they’re good enough to win, then I think we’re going to feel good about it. But it’s not about going out and getting individual stats for any player. Pass rushers or receivers or runners or any of that. That’s not what we’re there for. We’re there to win.

How did he react to the disciplinary action on Wednesday?
Good. Good. I had a good talk with Randy, and really … as we all know, he’s one of our team captains, he’s one of the most respected players on the team. He’s one of the best players on the team.

Is he a victim of his own success?
I think we all understand, and Randy better than anybody, that there’s a certain microscope on him, and he knows that. It’s always been that way with him. So this isn’t anything new. The big thing is every week is to come in, prepare, go out, work hard, play as well as you can on Sunday, come back, correct the mistakes and move on to the next week. And I think he’s very professional about that as is I feel that way really about our whole team, that we try to correct our mistakes and move on and get ready for the next game.

On the out that Moss ran…
It certainly could have been better executed. I think Tom talked about it this morning.

On Moss sitting by himself looking like he’s pouting — he just seemed like he didn’t want to be bothered by anybody…
I didn’t really get that feeling.

On the perception that Moss isn’t getting the job done because Welker is having success…
I really don’t know who’s perception you’re talking about. I watch the teams play, I would say that they do a lot in pass defense because of Randy and because of Wes. Those guys get a lot of coverage. That’s what I see. And that’s what we saw yesterday.

How come teams can’t stop Wes?
I just think by the nature of the position, we’ve seen slot receivers around here before, and we’ve seen some good ones. I think the nature of that position is one that has more variety in their routes, more options and different things you can do, and that’s, I don’t know if that leads to more catches. Probably less yards per catch, generally speaking. But more opportunities to work different types of routes from a position that gives you more space to work in. it’s just the nature of the spot.

On Welker…
Wes is a tough kid. Very tough, mentally and physically. And he’s a great competitor. Nobody wants to compete more than he does.

Does coverage change a lot from week to week, or is Randy still the primary object to shut down in your offense?
I think we’ve seen that for three years. Even on the 55-yard touchdown he caught last week against Miami at the start of the game, they were back there and he just got away from them.

On the TD pass to Smith on Sunday…
Yeah, we just didn’t do a good job on that play, obviously. When we break down, we break down as a team, and that includes everything — the rush and the coverage and the coaching. We just have to do a better job. We can’t give up those kind of plays.

On the pass rush — anything you can do about that as a coach or as a team?
I think yesterday was good from the standpoint of the third-down conversions. I mean, one was third and inches and another one was the Carolina version of the Wildcat play, where Smith kept the ball on the run, and the other was right there before the half — five seconds before the half or whatever it was. Other than that, the third-down conversions were good, and again, really, that’s what it’s about. It’s about getting the right combination of pressure and coverage to keep them from converting. I thought we had pressure on the quarterback several times. Moore got rid of the ball. A couple times, we … I don’t think Meriweather really had a chance to intercept the one to Smith out of the backfield, but those kind of plays where you got pressure on the quarterback and he throws it before you hit him, you’re not going to get there. But it’s good defense, and it gets you off the field.

Were you surprised they didn’t try and run at Titus Adams when he came into the game for Vince?
I think they stayed with the running game. They did pretty much what they did all game until the end, until the last series, and that’s when they went into their two-minute, and it was basically all passing. But up to that point, they still continued to run and play-action on first and second down. Almost all their passes were play-action passes — they didn’t really have any drop back passes until they got to third down, and then, they tried to do what they needed to do on third down to convert. But I thought they stayed with that regardless of who was in the game until the last series.

Was there that much of a dropoff from Delhomme to Moore?
Moore played well last week against Tampa. I thought he made a couple of good throws yesterday — the ball there to Rosario on the sideline was a good throw, the post to Smith … so he had some good throws. And then, there were times where they made good plays that were defended pretty well. Like any passer, everybody’s got some good plays and some ones that they’d rather have back that they weren’t exactly how they were designed. I think you see that pretty much every game.

Was moving the tackles around by design?
Right. Sebastian didn’t play a whole lot the week before against Miami, but this week, we wanted to get him in there and make sure he got some play time. He played both sides. I think that he continues to improve and he works hard. We want to continue to try and play him and kind of see how all that sorts out. We just haven’t really had all of them healthy for the most part all year. It’s been something, somewhere. If we get them all back healthy, it’ll be great. It’ll just make us a better team.

We’ve seen him play well enough on the left side — how about the right?
You know, not bad. Not bad. Peppers … we had a couple of problems throughout the course of the game with the pass rush — and that’s a good pass rushing team. Tom got rid of the ball on time for the most part. We didn’t have to hold it too much. Sebastian did a good job. Like always, there’s a couple of plays that could have been better than others, but overall, I thought he did a solid job.

Is it tough rotate offensive linemen in and out as often as you have had the last couple of weeks because of injuries?
I think ideally you’d like to have the same quarterback and receivers and offensive line and linebackers and DBs …. You’d like to have as much continuity as possible. But I don’t know in this league that anybody, you know, has that, ideally. Everybody’s got to make changes along the line sooner or later. It’s just kind of the nature of it. Those guys work together. They rotate in their in practice, particularly on the offensive line, when you can only take seven linemen to the game, you have two guys backing up five spots, you kind of have to rotate them through in there in practice. To be honest with you, I’m not sure how many plays in practice actually that first group really takes just together, where there isn’t somebody rotating in there or somebody because you’ve got to move some people over in the course of practice to get them into all the different spots. For the most part, usually, there’s somebody in the rotation.
