Rosevelt Colvin on D&H: Pleased for Brees 02.08.10 at 4:22 pm ET
By Tom Layman

A day after the misery for the Colts, former Patriots linebacker and Indiana native Rosevelt Colvin checked in from Indianapolis on Monday with the Dale & Holley show to talk about the Super Bowl.

Colvin, who played for the Patriots for six years and now owns businesses in Indianapolis, was a college teammate of Saints quarterback Drew Brees and reminisced on what Brees was like many years ago.

“Drew has been a competitor ever since I met him and I think that’s one of the great reasons why he has been as successful as he has,” he said.

Colvin also discussed his thoughts on the Super Bowl and who he believes should take some of the blame for the Colts being upended on the biggest stage.

The transcript follows. To listen, click here.

Is it pretty ugly in Indianapolis today?

We are recovering from a snowstorm, and people in the Midwest don’t know how to deal with snow. They put sand on the ground — not salt — and now they have another snowstorm coming in. On top of that, the Colts go down there and get beat by one of the greatest quarterbacks in history.

Drew Brees was a teammate of yours at Purdue.

Yeah, Drew was there for two years. Junior year he didn’t play and my senior year he did. I think I’d like to have something to do with what went down yesterday.

What are your memories of playing with Drew Brees?

That first year he was just servicing on the scout team, but my senior year he was out there and I had an opportunity to get real close to him because I was doing my good friend Matt Light in every day at practice and [Brees] would be frustrated because we would run in and tag him on the helmet or on the shoulder pads and let him know he wouldn’t have gotten that pass off. Drew has been a competitor ever since I met him and I think that’s one of the great reasons why he has been as successful as he has. With all the stereotypes of he is too small or he isn’t one of the upper-echelon quarterbacks in the league. I think that last year in San Diego, but even his whole career at Purdue, he always had something to prove. He went out and showed that yesterday that he deserves to be in those conversations and I’m very, very happy for him.

Did he seem “too good to be true” at Purdue as well?

He never was a guy that was out of control. I think he lived his college life and did what he needed to do. He was popular back then because he was the quarterback where he was very successful. The Heisman trophy thing, going through that whole thing, success is not something he is not familiar with. I think he handles himself in all arenas well and I’ve yet to seem him in a situation that is a bad predicament. Those are the guys that you want. Those are the guys you want to see get the opportunity that he’s had and get to be a Super Bowl champion. To lead a team and be Super Bowl MVP, it couldn’t have happened to a better guy beside myself.

What did you think about going into the game and what may have surprised you during it?

Leading up to the game, because I do a little analyst work here, I honestly thought that the Colts, every week I said this was the week they were going to lose, because it was a situation where I thought that the team that would come in would not be play as ignorant as they did. You know, turning the ball over, giving the ball up on the 1-yard line, things like that. So I thought that Minnesota would have had a better chance at beating [the Colts] because they were the better all around team. At the end of the day it boils down to the Saints not doing those things, like dropping the ball on a punt return or missing field goals. Before the game started I felt that the Saints, it was going to be a shootout. I didn’t think that they would be able to hold them to 17 points because I didn’t think they had the defense or the defensive playmakers to keep them out of the end zone. I thought that if the Saints won it was going to be a shootout, and the Colts could have one either way, a shootout or a tight ball game because they’ve done it all year long. It surprised me, and it was a great surprise. It surprised me that the Saints didn’t do those things like I said. Drew didn’t turn the ball over, they gave up one sack, they chose the right plays and this will probably go down as one of the greatest calls in the history for the next 10 years, the onside kick coming out of halftime. Those are the things, those special plays in those areas to beat the Colts. They couldn’t go up and down the field with them. They played a great game just like the Giants in ’07. Everything they did they did it right.

Who’s taking the most grief in Indianapolis today: Peyton Manning, Hank Baskett or Pierre Garcon?

I open up my store every day, and I’ve already had a three people come in here and say, “That freaking Hank Baskett.” I think Mr. Baskett is going to get his papers when they get off the plane today. Obviously I think the reason why the Colts are in the position they are in is because Pierre Garcon and [Austin] Collie performed at the level they did. Not just them but the other two rookies on the other side of the ball, the defensive backs. They performed at such a high level all year long that it wasn’t like the Colts missed a beat on offense or defense. I think in the big game [Garcon] dropped a couple of passes that could have changed the course of it. I think the decision that Mr. Baskett made to go after that onside kick kind of put him in a bad predicament. All the momentum swung the Saints favor. It was kind of like they were our there playing arena ball. In arena ball whoever has the ball the most wins the game and the Saints ended up getting more possessions and that ended the story so there you have it.

Where do you rank this edition of the Colts?

I would say they are probably one of the better ones, because they weren’t relying solely on Peyton and the offense to do everything. You got to give their defensive side some credit because they play good defense all year long. Even in the game they played some good defense. That goal line stand, that was huge. Gary Brackett, to be without Dwight Freeney part of the time of the season, Bob Sanders, your emotional and very good player on defense as well, and to play with those rookies and young linebackers I think they did a good job, they held their own. This has to be probably one of the better teams. Obviously they didn’t win the championship, but I would say they are one of the better teams because of the way they performed. They went out and played every weekend and they piled up victories. It doesn’t really matter. They are very upset. They had to cancel their parade. The city is very distraught right now.

What’s Manning’s image in Indiana?

I would think everybody feels very positive about him. There’s not a lot of negative publicity or things out there that people are saying. They love him. The people of Indianapolis love their Colts, they love what Tony Dungy has done and did for the city. Obviously the transition of him to the new coaching staff, there is not a lot of people that dislike them. They understand the value of having 18 behind center because unfortunately when they put the backup it wasn’t a good situation. Peyton at the end of the day, the things he does for the city of Indianapolis for the community, and not just here he does a lot of stuff in New Orleans and Tennessee as well, he does a great job of giving back and showing people how appreciative he is of who he is and what they have done for him. We ship the packages and do a lot of the printing for his foundation, so I get to see his assistant a lot and them come in a lot and so things for people. I’m happy to be helping out the kids here in Indianapolis.

How does it feel in that city that a cornerback from Indiana University made the play of the game?

I don’t even know how that guy even got to IU, I think he transferred from Purdue. I think [Tracy] Porter made a great play. I don’t even think Reggie Wayne saw that Peyton was going to throw him the ball, because if you look at the play it doesn’t even look like Reggie is expecting the ball because Porter was playing inside. If anybody knows the Colts or has played against the Colts they know that is one of their old in routes that they run all the time, and I think Peyton just tried to squeeze it in there and the guy took it. If Reggie would have read off of him and ran back out to the sidelines, then Peyton would have thrown an out and Reggie would have scored six on that play. It’s a great play by him and a lot of guys that played for the Patriots like Heath [Evans] and Dave Thomas and Randall Guy and a couple guys from Indianapolis like Paul Spicer and Courtney Roby, I was rooting for the Saints all day long.

Let us not forget that Reagan’s future vp (Bush) and cia chief (Casey) met with the Ayatolla Khomeini behind the back of the then-current Carter administration (treason) and arranged for Iran to keep the American hostages until after the election. In return Iran got, at the very least, a conduit thru which to illegally receive missiles and other armaments–which came to light when traitor Ollie North got busted taking the missile $$$ and giving it to friends in Central America who turned out, naturally enough, to be drug smugglers USA-bound. Ah, the good old days…
