Mocking the draft — Post-combine 03.03.10 at 12:03 pm ET
By DJ Bean

WEEI.com isn’t batting an eye when it comes to the 2010 NFL Draft. From interviews with experts to original mock drafts to weekly looks at potential Patriots, this is the place to be leading up to draft weekend, April 22-24.

The third installment of WEEI.com’s mock draft is the first one since we returned from the NFL Scouting Combine. Some rose, some fell, and though both Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy were very impressive, we do in fact have a new No. 1. Some of these picks may surprise you — Penn State’s Jared Odrick is now clearly a guy worth spending a Top 10 pick on and Illinois receiver Arrelious Benn doesn’t deserve to fall even in such a strong draft. The Rams are on the clock.

rams

Gerald McCoy vows to "kill" Sam Bradford, but which of the Oklahoma teammates is headed to St. Louis? (AP)

Gerald McCoy vows to "kill" Sam Bradford, but which of the Oklahoma teammates is headed to St. Louis? (AP)

1.  St. Louis (1-15) Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma This is less the result of anything Suh or McCoy did this weekend — as Christopher Price pointed out, they are model citizens, marketable and tested very well. This just comes down to the fact that no matter how good of defensive tackles they end up being, a team as lost as the Rams needs a franchise quarterback, and that means more than any other position.

lions

2.  Detroit (2-14) Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska The Lions don’t face the same issue as the Rams. They know who their quarterback is going forward and can take the best player on the board.

buccaneers

3.  Tampa Bay (3-13) Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma It’s been quite some time since the Bucs had an explosive defensive tackle who was oozing with character, but it worked out last time, didn’t it? McCoy is worthy of the No. 1 pick — and I’m still not convinced that a clear distinction has been drawn that  Suh is the better prospect.

redskins

4.  Washington (4-12) Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame If Clausen doesn’t go here, he will go sixth. All of the talk of him not being a Top 10 pick will likely subside once he throws.

chiefs

5.  Kansas City (4-12) Eric Berry, S, Tennessee The Chiefs went with need over value last year, and one massive contract to massive mistake Tyson Jackson later, they might just want to grab the player that many consider the next Ed Reed for good measure.

seahawks

6.  Seattle (5-11) Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State Bruce Campbell did some great things over the weekend, but Okung remains the top tackle for now thanks to his 38 reps. A very viable replacement — this year or next — for Walter Jones.

browns

7.  Cleveland (5-11) Jason Pierre-Paul, DE/OLB, South Florida Pierre-Paul is hands-down the best pass-rushing prospect in an outstanding defensive class. Thanks to his size (6-foot-4 1/2, 270 pounds) and speed (4.64 second 40-yard dash) a Top 10 team will overlook his one year of FBS play.

raiders

8.  Oakland (5-11) Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland Campbell was a mid first-rounder heading into the combine, so if the Raiders take him eighth overall based on his 40 time, it wouldn’t be the worst thing they’ve done.

bills

9.  Buffalo (6-10) Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa Mike Mayock said Sunday in Indianapolis that Bulaga wouldn’t make it out of the Top 10, and considering the Bills’ need for a tackle, this could be the pick that proves him right.

jaguars

10.  Jacksonville (7-9) Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State Bryant could fall a bit based on the fact that this draft features so many elite talents on both the offensive and defensive line. If the Jaguars are the team that lands Tim Tebow, which might be tough considering that the Patriots have their second-rounder. (Worth trading a future first for? Separate discussion.) But they’d be getting a solid posession receiver who could be in his prime by the time Tebow is ready.

broncos

11.  Denver [from CHI] (7-9) Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State If I had to pick one prospect that I left the combine singing a much different tune on, it is Odrick. The Penn State tackle, who appeared to have a very high football IQ, can play any position on the line in either a 3-4 or 4-3 and reminds many of Richard Seymour.

dolphins

12.  Miami (7-9) Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee With Vince Wilfork and Aubrayo Franklin off the market, there aren’t any good options in free agency for the Dolphins to upgrade over Jason Ferguson — assuming they let him walk.

49ers

13.  San Francisco (8-8) Joe Haden, CB, Florida Haden entered the combine with a full head of steam. After a 4.58 second 40-yard dash, everything changes. Now, Haden is now seen as a riskier pick who could allow receivers to gain separation on deep routes.

seahawks1

14.  Seattle [from DEN] (8-8) C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson If the Seahawks can’t secure a QB in the Top 10 the least they can do is get a difference maker at a skill position with their other first-rounder.

giants

15.  New York Giants (8-8) Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama This would be a dream scenario for the Giants and it is quite realistic such a fall for McClain could play out given that so many players catapulted themselves past McClain and into the Top 15 discussion over the weekend.

titans

16.  Tennessee (8-8) Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech If Kyle Vanden Bosch leaves, the Titans could land his replacement at good value with Morgan.

49ers1

17.  San Francisco [from CAR] (8-8) Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers There was a time that Davis was seen as the draft’s top tackle prospect, but after a weak (21 reps) showing at the combine he may be nothing more than San Fransisco’s next right tackle.

steelers

Ricky Sapp measured in one-and-one-eighth of an inch below the Belichick line, but may not even be around at No. 22

Ricky Sapp measured in one-and-one-eighth of an inch below the Belichick line, but may not even be around at No. 22. (AP)

18.  Pittsburgh (9-7) Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson In the eyes of many, Sapp has leap-frogged Sergio Kindle and is the next-best pure pass-rusher after Pierre-Paul.

falcons

19.  Atlanta (9-7) Sergio Kindle, DE, Texas With all the talk of Kindle being a conversion guy, don’t overlook a 4-3 team taking him and keeping him at defensive end. Kindle could occasionally spell and eventually replace John Abraham.

texans

20.  Houston (9-7) Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame Tate ran better than he expected (he was one of the few players to tell reporters a reasonable time beforehand and actually live up to it) and with the success that Matt Schaub has had they just may feel entitled to spend a first-rounder on a slot receiver and make the offense that much more dangerous.

bengals

21.  Cincinnati (10-6) Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois Benn is another guy who many came away from Indianapolis much higher on. My guess would be that Odrick is ideally their guy, but they would need to move up to grab him. Benn has good speed and strength for his size and will eventually be the No. 1 receiver in Cincinnati when Chad Ochocinco is gone.

patriots

22.  New England (10-6) Carlos Dunlap, DE/OLB, Florida The perceived safe bets at No. 22 of Sapp, Odrick, and Graham are no longer sure things after all three saw their stocks increase in Indianapolis. I still don’t think the Pats would pull the trigger on Graham, but he could be gone before No. 22 anyway, making it a moot point. Dunlap impressed in Indy but Urban Meyer may need to assure Bill Belichick that Dunlap is up for the challenge.

packers

23.  Green Bay (11-5) Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma Some like Williams better than Davis, but no matter what the Packers will have their choice of good linemen, which just may help Aaron Rodgers’ nightmares about Jared Allen subside a bit.

eagles

24.  Philadelphia (11-5) Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech LeSean McCoy will have to make up for Brian Westbrook’s production, so landing a power back to team with him will make for an effective tandem.

ravens

25.  Baltimore (9-7) Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan Nothing against Jarret Johnson, but Graham would take his job right away and his high-energy style of play would fit perfectly on the same field as Ray Lewis.

cardinals

26.  Arizona (10-6) Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma Gresham missed all of 2009 due to right knee surgery, but the Cardinals should be so scared of Matt Leinart as their starting quarterback that they should go to any lengths to get him another good target.

cowboys

27.  Dallas (11-5) Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho With starting left guard Kyle Rosier a year away from free agency the Cowboys could land Iupati at a great value and spend the 2010 season grooming him.

chargers

28.  San Diego (13-3) Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State Uncertainty over the Mathews’ actual 40 time had him jumping all over the board in the media’s eyes, but at the end of the day his 4.45 official time, coupled with his 5-foot-11 6/8 frame makes him a solid late-first/early-second-round option. Jahvid Best ran exceptionally well and like Mathews has injury concerns. A.J. Smith could go in either direction.

jets

29.  New York Jets (9-7) Everson Griffen, DE, USC Griffen didn’t run the absurd-sounding 4.5 that he promised, but a 4.66 is impressive enough for somebody with his size. He may be a potential consolation prize for whoever misses out on Sapp.

vikings

30.  Minnesota (12-4) Tim Tebow, QB, Florida My guess is still that the Jaguars or Bills will trade back into the late first to grab Tebow, but if not the Vikings could secure him and go the Favre/Rosenfels/Jackson route while Tebow develops.

colts

31.  Indianapolis (14-2) Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers The Colts might need the return ability that McCourty brings more than his coverage skills, but for a team that doesn’t have any real needs with the exception of middle linebacker, they can take whoever they deem to be the best available player.

saints

32.  New Orleans (13-3) Taylor Mays, S, USC Poor guy. Imagine going from thinking you were on the verge of beating Chris Johnson’s record in the 40-yard dash to having a slightly above-average time. Darren Sharper won’t be around forever so the Saints should go after the well-balanced Mays.

No way the Steelers grab an OLB with Woodley and Harrison, maybe later in the draft but not that high. Thats not even close to a need.

No Earl Thomas in the first round?

    Tate before Benn?

  • DJ Bean

    Hey SteelCubs,

I believe that Benn is far and away a better prospect than Tate, but the Texans would rather replace Kevin Walter with someone who can do more once the ball is caught. That makes Tate the pick in Houston, though teams looking for a No. 1 and not a slot would likely prefer Benn.

Regarding Thomas, he is definitely a notable absence in this mock, but I urge everyone to look more at historical patterns and less at what the average mock draft says. Three safeties have gone in the first round just twice since 1993 and I feel that either Mays or Thomas could fall from the first round considering how good a year it is for teams to strengthen their offensive or defensive lines.

As for the Steelers, LaMarr Woodley is hitting free agency after the season and could be awfully tough to retain. The Steelers could get his potential replacement at very good value if Sapp is there at 18. Thanks again for reading.

  • http://n/a Hmmm

I’ll just about guarantee you they don’t pick Carlos Dunlap. Character issues arose yet again at the combine. The Patriots don’t need another immature and lazy player.

  • Charles

Golden Tate is the pick if the Patriots are using their #22 pick.

  • Hub

Dunlap is more of an Al Davis kind of player.

  • TBill

Dunlap at #22 would be a steal. Amid all the issues about his character, let’s not forget Dunlap is physically comparable to Mario Williams or J Peppers. He was the defensive MVP at the national championship game in 2009. He is just a junior in the cllege. How mature can he be? This kind of talent does not come along very often. Merriweather also had some character issues in college. Pats drafted him anyway.

  • Jeremiah

No way will Belichek take Dunlap at 22. He is a dog. Takes plays off. No motor. No work ethic. He would make Randy Moss look like Hines Ward…Manny Ramirez like Pete Rose…Phil Kessel like Cam Neely…

  • Jimmy Freeze

    I see 2 scenarios for the Pats…
Likely: they trade down from 22 to late 1st/early 2nd to acquire an early 3rd + maybe 5th
    Less likely, but conceivable:
    Trade 22 + Jacksonville’s prior 2nd for Jacksonville’s #10 to get Spiller/McClain/Morgan

  • Ryan

Any mock draft that had Tebow in the first round must be thrown out immediately. Im surprised the editor even let it get to the webpage.

  • http://www.weei.com DJ Bean

I understand the hostility towards a mock that features Tebow in the first round, but here’s the reasoning behind it: More teams like Tebow than you think and, much like Maurice Clarett in 2005, one team will want so badly to secure that they’re the team that lands him that that they might have to move back into the late first.

Is Tebow a first, second, or even third-round talent at quarterback? Most definitely not (at this point anyway), but mock drafts are about reading into what teams will do, not what the individual would like them to do.
    Thanks for reading,

    DJ

Leave it up to WEEI to project the Patritos to draft a non 3-4 DE. Try researching. DO YOUR JOB!!!

  • http://weei.com Greg Moore

Chris, i love your reading your material on the Patriots because of your detailed insight. I agree with your top ten for the most part, but after that there are some real head scratchers. First of all, Ricky Sapp to the Steelers is absurd considering the investment they have in James Harrison and Lamarr Woodley, and the production coming from each. They would never spend first round money on a “back-up.” Dunlap to the Pats is laughable, at best. I understand the Urban Meyer connection with Bill, but Dunlap has a checkered past to be kind. He isn’t even serious enough about football to stay sober in the weeks leading up to the National Championship. Taylor Mays 32nd overall, thats ridiculous. And by the way that “official” time is incorrect in his case, go review the tape of him and Holiday running simulataneously. And where the heck is Sean Witherspoon after that combine….he might be the second LB off the board!!!

  • http://www.weei.com DJ Bean

    JP,

Double-check. Everything we have written about Sapp has said he will be a 3-4 OLB. Not sure where you got that we have him as a 3-4 DE.

Would you like me to give you a formula for…success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure… You’re thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all… You can be discouraged by failure, or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember, that’s where you’ll find success– on the far side of failure.
