Tyler Gaffney

Running back Tyler Gaffney has been in the NFL for three seasons, but has yet to find a role for himself while battling injuries. In fact, he’s yet to get a carry in a regular-season game.

Gaffney’s career could now be with another team, as he was released by the Patriots on Monday.

After suffering a knee injury during training camp with Carolina in 2014, Gaffney was claimed off of waivers by the Patriots. He was then placed on season-ending injured reserve, and also spent the 2015 season on injured reserve.

Last year he suffered a foot injury in the final preseason game and was released when the team cut their roster down to 53 players. Gaffney was re-signed to the practice squad in October and spent a few weeks on the active roster, but didn’t appear in any games. He signed a futures contract after the Super Bowl.

With Gaffney now out of the picture, the Patriots have Dion Lewis, James White, D.J. Foster and Rex Burkhead on the depth chart.

Bill Belichick said Monday that the Patriots were already behind the rest of the league when it came to the offseason work schedule, and to that end, they announced Tuesday they have signed eight players from the 2016 practice squad to future contracts. In addition, the Patriots also signed tight end Rob Housler to a future contract.

Offensive linemen Chris Barker, Jamil Douglas and Chase Farris; defensive linemen Woodrow Hamilton and Darius Kilgo; linebacker Trevor Bates, running back Tyler Gaffney and wide receiver Devin Lucien were all signed in what amounted to procedural moves.

As for Housler, he’s a 28-year-old veteran of five NFL seasons with Arizona (2011-14), Cleveland (2015) and Chicago (2015). A 6-foot-5, 250-pounder, he originally entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick (69th overall) of the Cardinals out of Florida Atlantic in the 2011 NFL Draft. Housler has played in 65 NFL games with 27 starts and has 109 receptions for 1,166 yards with one touchdown.

FOXBORO — The Patriots made a roster move on Thursday.

The team released running back Tyler Gaffney according to the NFL transaction wire, which on the surface appears like a small move, but could be the sign of an even bigger one to come.

The Patriots now have an open spot on their 53-man roster, which now seems very likely to be filled by running back Dion Lewis, who is currently on the PUP list, but began practicing two weeks ago and appears ready for game action. He needs to be activated to the active roster by next Thursday, or else he would revert back to injured reserve.

Lewis suffered a torn ACL exactly a year ago this week and then needed a “clean up” surgery in August. While he seems likely to return this week, it will in all likelihood be on a limited basis as the team works him back into game mode.

“He practiced last week, expect to practice him again this week,” Bill Belichick said Monday on Dale & Holley with Thornton. “I think he’s making progress everyday. We’ll just evaluate and see how it goes. He hasn’t played football in almost a year, so training is one thing, but actually getting out there with 21 other guys on the field is another. That’s something we can’t simulate. All we can do is actually do it and see how it progresses, but I think he’s making progress.”

The Patriots also have an open spot on the practice squad, so it is possible Gaffney reverts back there.

Activating Lewis to the active roster for this week needs to be done by Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Patriots needed to get their roster to 53 players by Saturday night and in doing so signed running back Tyler Gaffney to their active roster from the practice squad.

If Gaffney is active for the game, it would be his NFL debut as he has been placed on injured reserve in his only two years in the league thus far.

Gaffney didn’t make the initial 53-man roster, but re-signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago after an injury settlement.

The move was a bit surprising given other options on the practice squad, including running back Bishop Stankey. The team could have also promoted defensive tackle Anthony Johnson.

Patriots add FB Glenn Gronkowski, RB Tyler Gaffney to practice squad 10.17.16 at 4:40 pm ET

FOXBORO — Gillette Stadium is a two-Gronkowski place again.

Fullback Glenn Gronkowski was in the Patriots locker room Monday afternoon and confirmed he has been added back to the Patriots practice squad. He was released last week after spending a week on the practice squad leading into the Browns game.

Another familiar face was also seen, as running back Tyler Gaffney was spotted and also confirmed he has been added to the practice squad. Gaffney was released with an injury settlement after training camp, but settled with the team and is now back on the practice squad.

The Patriots had two open spots on the practice squad following the promotions of Anthony Johnson and Geneo Grissom for Sunday’s game against the Bengals.

The Patriots made a number of roster moves to get down to 53 players by 4 p.m.

Of those moves came the release of running back Tyler Gaffney, cornerback Darryl Roberts and linebacker Kevin Synder. Later confirmed by the NFL transaction wire, those three players were released with an injury designation.

This means if they go unclaimed on Sunday, they would revert back to the Patriots’ injured reserve.

For Gaffney it would be his third straight year on IR and Roberts’ second.

A source told WEEI.com’s Christopher Price Synder was injured in the final preseason game against the Giants.

Pats cut RB Tyler Gaffney, WR Keshawn Martin and DL Markus Kuhn at 1:27 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off on Pats cut RB Tyler Gaffney, WR Keshawn Martin and DL Markus Kuhn

The Patriots continue their cuts, as wide receiver Keshawn Martin, running back Tyler Gaffney and defensive lineman Markus Kuhn have all been released.

The news was first reported by Tom E. Curran of Comcast Sports Net.

Martin, 26, was added to the New England roster midway through last season, and had 24 catches for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns in nine games for the Patriots. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder also has special teams value, as he spent time as a kick returner with New England last season.

The 25-year-old Gaffney was claimed off waivers from Carolina in 2014, but spent the last two seasons on the sidelines because of knee issues. While the 6-foot, 220-pound Gaffney flashed positively at times this preseason, he was unable to separate himself from the rest of the pack, and likely lost ground in a positional battle with rookie D.J. Foster, who played well in the preseason finale against the Giants.

The 30-year-old Kuhn is a 6-foot-4, 303-pound defensive tackle who signed as a veteran free agent this past spring with the Patriots after four years with the Giants.

The Patriots have to get their active roster to 53 by Saturday at 4 p.m.
